As usual, the ISM is organising a number of important professional conferences and seminars over the months and years ahead. Keep these dates free, and watch for further details and booking forms.
This year’s PTS seminar, entitled Music Teaching: Everyone’s Learning, will be chaired by Helen Marcus, Warden of the Private Teachers Section for 2006-07. It will focus on the variety of pupils that instrumental and vocal teachers are asked to teach, including those with specific learning needs, but also more generally on how musical learning can help pupils’ learning in other disciplines. These themes were explored in the Helen’s address to the PTS Annual Section Meeting in Brecon on 20 April, printed on pages 22-23 of June’s MJ. Speakers will include Lucinda Mackworth-Young, director of Music, Mind and Movement and consultant in psychology for musicians, who will consider the learning of all pupils from a psychological standpoint and how this can help teachers to take care of themselves; singer and teacher Paula Bishop, on teaching a musical instrument/voice to students with dyslexia; and Jacqueline Clifton of the RCM and Musicians in Focus, on teaching the visually-impaired.
Booking forms will be available with August’s MJ.
In 2007, the ISM’s annual conference, under the chairmanship of Colin Bradbury, President for 2006-07, will be visiting the south-west for the first time since 1982. The venue will be the Palace Hotel in Torquay.
