The Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) will be holding its 2006 annual conference in Brecon, Powys, from Tuesday 18 April to Friday 21 April. The conference will be chaired by the Society’s outgoing President, Robert Lloyd CBE, and is entitled ‘A Welcome in the Hillside’.
Speakers include the distinguished Sarod player, teacher and composer Dr Rajeeb Chakraborty, in a session on the appreciation of Indian classical music; Paula Gardiner, jazz co-ordinator at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, on the contrasts and comparisons between jazz and classical music; Edmond Fivet, principal of the RWCMD, and Alan Price, head of South Powys Youth Music, leading a discussion on music education in Wales; and Dr Aled Lloyd Davies, who will give a presentation on Penillion harp music, with illustrations by Meinir Heulyn. A Composers’ Forum chaired by John Hearne will feature John McLeod, Professor Ian Parrott, Sarah Rodgers and Richard Allain; and the guest speaker at the annual dinner will be the eminent critic Rodney Milnes. Robert Lloyd will deliver a Presidential Address, and talks will be given by the incoming Wardens of the Society’s Specialist Sections – Professor Grenville Hancox MBE (Music in Education), John McLeod (Performers & Composers) and Helen Marcus (Private Teachers). At the close of the conference, the eminent clarinettist Colin Bradbury will become the ISM’s President for the next twelve months.
Music during the conference will include a concert by the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales; a public concert in Brecon Cathedral, conducted by David Gedge MBE, the cathedral’s director of music, including Mozart’s Requiem, in which conference participants will join the choir; and candlelit Compline in the cathedral, sung by the cathedral choir. The Welsh vocal ensemble Serendipity will provide music before, during and after the annual dinner.
Elsewhere, participants will visit Craig-y-Nos Castle, the home of Adelina Patti, where there will be a guided tour and tea; and on the final day of the conference there will be a trip on the beautiful Monmouthshire Canal, down the Usk valley from Brecon to Brynich and back. Throughout the conference, an art exhibition organized by the Museum of Modern Welsh Art at Machynlleth will be on display.
The conference will be based at the Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon, with accommodation and the annual dinner at the Castle Hotel.
