ISM Music Education Conference

9 January 2003

Wider Opportunities is the topical theme for a conference to be held on Sunday 16 March 2003, at the School of Oriental & African Studies, London WC1. Chaired by Richard Hallam, Warden of the ISM’s Music in Education Section for 2002-03, the conference will present some of the latest thinking and findings from research on musical participation in and outside the classroom. There will be opportunities to discuss and debate the issues, as well as to take part in some live music-making.

Contributors include: David Hargreaves, Professor of Child Development and Director of the Centre for International Research in Music Education, on the future development of music education in the 21st century – in particular, ways in which both the formal and informal sectors can contribute to widening musical experience; Dr Alexandra Lamont, Course Director and Lecturer in the Psychology of Music at Keele University, presenting the latest findings of research into young peoples’ music in and out of school at Key Stages 2 and 3; Graeme Surtees, Education & Training Manager of Traditional Arts Projects (TAPS), demonstrating how the rhythm and techniques of samba percussion playing are now finding their way into more formal music education; and Richard Hickman, Chief Executive of the Federation of Music Services, who will present a personal view on extending musical participation and experience.

The cost is £48 for ISM members and £70 for non-members. The closing date for bookings is Friday 28 February 2003.
